Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust signs £25 million contract to deliver healthcare at HMP Wormwood Scrubs

Summary

Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust (CLCH) has signed a £25 million, three year contract to provide healthcare services to HMP Wormwood Scrubs, following a competitive tender process.

The trust has been commissioned by Inner North West London PCTs to provide a full range of primary care services to the prison’s 1,300 inmates, with Central North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL) a partner, providing secondary mental health and substance misuse services.

James A. Reilly, CLCH Chief Executive said: “Offender healthcare is a challenging and highly specialised area of healthcare delivery. We are pleased to be formally appointed as the preferred healthcare provider for HMP Wormwood Scrubs, following a close working relationship with the prison under previous commissioning arrangements.”

CLCH has been providing offender healthcare for HMP Wormwood Scrubs since 2009. This contract formalises the trust’s strong working relationship with the prison, consolidating current commissioning arrangements.

CLCH provides a full range of primary care services at HMP Wormwood Scrubs, from the point an inmate enters the prison until they are released. On arrival the inmates are given a series of nurse-led assessment checks to establish the initial state of their overall health and well-being.  During their induction phase, they are referred to any specialist services they may need, e.g. physical or mental health services.

James A. Reilly added: “Working with our partners in CNWL, we will continue to ensure that better health of prisoners contributes positively to their overall rehabilitation.”

The contract is valued at approximately £8 million per annum, and formally begins on 1 November 2011. CLCH’s legal advisers throughout the negotiations have been Beachcrofts Solicitors.
